This month Barb, at
Handbook of Nature Study blog, provided us with the challenge of studying mammals. For our family, this has resulted in some very fun field trips.
First, we went to The Center for Marine Education and Research on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. They are a marine mammal rehabilitation facility. (That's a fancy way to say that they rescue and rehabilitate bottlenose dolphins native to our area of the Gulf Coast.)
We learned that dolphins are born with a little bit of hair around their rostrums (the pointy bottlenose part of the dolphin. It's not a nose, because they don't breathe through it.) They soon lose it. They are born alive after being carried inside the mother dolphin for an entire year. They breathe air, like us, but can hold their breaths for an extended period of time, if need be. They suckle at their mother's breast.
And we got to watch a dolphin show. It was a great deal of fun.

The other field trip in which we participated as part of our nature study for the month was a field trip to a horse boarding farm. The children got a chance to brush the horses, learn about safety around horses and each one got to ride. Before we left for the field trip, I read the entry from
HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY
to the children.
They had such a wonderful experience that we hope to be able to add individual horse riding lessons for each of the children. The owner of this farm will allow me to pay for lessons per child as I can afford it. She doesn't require a commitment for a series of lessons. She is also willing to allow me to come during regular school hours with my children. We don't have any pets. The experience was so positive for my children that I hope to be able to do it once a month.

I am submitting this to
Barb's Outdoor Hour Challenge Blog Carnival.
I think that teaching the little ones about about animals is so important. What a great study. Fun, too, I'd bet.
ReplyDeleteHave your children ridden horse before? Matt never has and we've talked about it because it was a highlight of my childhood.
Do they release the dolphins back into the bay when they are rehabilitated? I never thought about a pregnant mother dolphin before, though I should have since I knew they gave live birth. That is all pretty amazing. What a miraculous world.
This was the first time for my children to ride horses, but if I can work it out, it won't be the last. The experience was really moving, and the kids were just elated.
DeleteThe organization where we did the field trip rehabilitates dolphins and returns them to the wild. We found the entire dolphin field trip to be really interesting. I know I learned a great deal about dolphins. I've seen dolphin shows before, but have never had someone explain about dolphins. It was cool.
(I still think the kids liked the horse field trip better, though.)
Great study of a couple of interesting mammals! Dolphins are some of my favorite animals of all. :)
ReplyDeleteHorses are a great study and can lead to a lifetime of fun for your children. Great job finding some mammals to observe up close.
Thanks. Because of your challenge we had 2 really great field trips and I really believe we will spend more time on that horse farm. The kids were just enraptured by the experience.
DeleteWhat great studies! I love dolphins, what a treat to be able to take your children to watch them ;o)
ReplyDeleteI love dolphins, too. How convenient for our OHC that they are mammals. :)
DeleteThe field trip was a lot of fun, too.
Dolphins. Fantastic! It didn't even occur to me to go to the Aquarium.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures of the kids with the horses are wonderful. I always loved riding as a kid.
Sarah
Thanks. You can include dolphins the next time we cover mammals. :)
DeleteThis was my children's first experience with horses. I have been dreaming of getting them back to that farm soon, soon, soon. Unfortunately, life has intervened during the current month. Hopefully, we will go back right after the new year. It was such a positive and joyful experience for them.
How exciting! My daughter LOVES both dolphins AND horses. Living in Wisconsin, though, we don't see many dolphins! lol
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I like about blogging and participating in online events like the OHC is that we can see what things people have in their parts of the country. I am sure you have animals in Wisconsin that we never see down here on the coast, too.
DeleteWonderful mammal study, Cristy! You did a great job seeking out some opportunities, and you kids will probably never forget that a dolphin is a mammal!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the horse riding field trip went so well. I find animals bring my children such joy so I hope you are able to make it back regularly.
Thank you, Heidi. I hope to take the children back there in January (at least that is my hope.) I hope we can make it a regular part of our homeschool experience, too. :)
DeleteMy kids love dolphins and we do see them playing in the waves along our coast, but they only realized how large and powerful they were when we went to a dolphin show! They are awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful how your children loved their time with the horses! This could well develop into a passion and a lifelong love!
Dolphins really are awesome!
DeleteI hope that my children can develop a passion and lifelong love. One of my goals in homeschooling is to help them find their passions and lifelong loves and then enable them to pursue those things. I will definitely give them more horse time so they can choose for themselves.:)
