A printable page containing "My Insect List" was one of the things
Barb provided for us in this month's study of insects.
As you can see from my sheet, we have more than filled up the space provided us for insects. Barb offered me a
bigger printable when she responded to my
last post about our September study.
Here are some highlights from the insects we have seen in September 2012.

"Love bugs." I don't know their real name, but they swarm twice a year in
this area, and pollinate plants, but are considered a nuisance
because there are so many of them when they swarm and they
leave marks on vehicles. |

Longtail skipper. This is the butterfly
that makes leafroller caterpillars on
green bean plants. |

| Another butterfly. Swallowtail, I think. |

| Some type of beetle and their larvae in a log. |

Look closely. Do you see the tiny dots in the middle? Those are lacewing eggs. They are suspended from a tiny thread from the green bean vines. |

| Tiny leafroller found on my green beans. |

| Some type of dragonfly. |
I can see that I need to buy myself a good field guide about insects in our area. Anyone out there have any favorites?
I thought that I had commented on this entry...but I don't see it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great collection of insects so far this month!I think you are going to have to extend this study over the next few months and see how many more you can add to your list. I just keep my list going year round and it is a wonderful record to look back and see when and where you observe a species.
Thanks for sharing your entry with the OHC.
I think we are just going to keep a running list of insects all year round, while doing other studies. The kids and I can't seem to stop. We find things, look them up, learn about them, even though I said, "Okay. We need to move on from insects now."
DeleteI know a lot of people do that with birds, and my middle daughter loves birds, but insects have the whole family enthralled. :)
Wow. You have so many insects on your list! I love the pictures of the butterflies. We've mostly been seeing caterpillars.
ReplyDeleteSarah
I wish we had seen more caterpillars, actually. We saw lots of bugs, though, and the kids are really interested in bugs now. :)
